If You Don’t Start You Can’t Finish

Do not wait: the time will never be “just right.” Start where you stand, and work whatever tools you may have at your command and better tools will be found as you go along.

Napoleon Hill

Starting is the most important part of any project.

Planning and preparation are important.

But they will never be perfect.

There will always be some uncertainty.

There will always be some unanticipated event.

Even the best plan will need retooling once it encounters the real world.

If we wait too long to start, our plan will be out of date.

We can try to predict the future.

But even the best supercomputers cannot account for all the variables that affect the future.

The best we can hope for is to get started in the right direction.

But even then, we may need to stop and head in a completely different direction.

There is no shame in adjusting our plan, even if it means starting over from the beginning.

The big mistake is rigidly sticking to a plan that no longer fits reality.

Of course, there will be critics who will blast us for not seeing “the obvious.”

But we shouldn’t give too much weight to the opinions of those who are sitting on the sidelines.

They have no skin in the game.

It is difficult to think clearly when there is nothing at risk.

So, what have you been putting off because you were “not quite ready”?

What idea have you been reluctant to test in the real world?

What concrete step could you take today to get started?

You don’t need to hit a homerun with every swing of the bat.

Even if this idea doesn’t pan out, it may lead you to an even better idea.

Make a commitment to yourself to begin today.
