The Future Will Be Here Before You Know It
The best way to predict the future is to create it.
Peter Drucker
On Saturday, I was volunteering for a nonprofit at the local farmers’ market.
An 11-year-old boy stopped by our booth, and we began chatting.
He was amazingly engaging and articulate.
He asked me if I knew where there was a farm nearby that maybe had chickens.
He told me that he had tricked his father into buying fertilized duck eggs.
He said that his parents were upset when they found out, but once the eggs hatched the whole family became attached to the little ducklings.
Now, they are looking for somewhere they can leave them temporarily while they are traveling.
At this point, I knew there was something special about this kid.
As the conversation continued, he mentioned that he planned to be a pilot.
So far, the conversation had been notable because he was unusually charming and charismatic for a child.
But then the conversation took a startling turn.
“I already know what college I’m going to attend.”
He mentioned a certain aviation school in Dubai.
“That sounds like it’s going to cost a lot of money.”
“I already know how I’m going to pay for it.”
“Oh? How’s that?”
“Landscaping.”
“Landscaping, huh?”
“Yes. I’ve already saved 2K.”
His mom was now there.
I looked at her, and she nodded her head.
“Wow. That’s impressive.”
He then told me the full list of all the services he provides and their associated costs.
“Those are the prices I charge for my customers who have a monthly subscription.”
An 11-year-old is signing up his neighbors for subscriptions to landscaping services.
I picked up a piece of wood with Drucker’s quotation engraved on it.
“My gift to you.”
