“There’s someone in my head, but it’s not me.”

I keep fighting voices in my mind that say I’m not enough
Every single lie that tells me I will never measure up
Am I more than just the sum of every high and every low
Remind me once again just who I am because I need to know
“You Say,” Song by Lauren Daigle

That voice that you hear in your head is not you.

That doesn’t mean that you’re crazy.

Well, not any crazier than the rest of us.

That’s right!

We all have similar struggles.

That person who looks like they have it all together, they have dark thoughts too.

The ones who post their perfect life on social media, it’s as fake as those filters they use.

People who write self-development essays, how do you think they know what needs fixing?

Everyone struggles with self-esteem.

Even those who seem to be narcissists are just compensating for a lack of self-worth.

Praise feels good, but it cannot make you feel that you are enough.

Accomplishments have a short shelf life.

If you compare yourself to others, you will never measure up.

Don’t try to build your life on what you are and what you’ve done.

Build your life on who you are.

You are an amazing creation who is valuable just because you exist.

As children, being bored is an existential crisis.

But even as adults, our emotions ebb and swell.

That’s why we need something solid to hang on to.

The voice in your head is not you.

Just as you do not automatically accept the comments of others as gospel truth, you should not assume your internal voice is always accurate.

If a good friend said something that wasn’t accurate, you would correct them — but do it gently.

And if someone consistently criticized you, you would get away from them.

It is difficult to get away from the voice in your head.

But you can stand up to it.

Sometimes, you can benefit from its observations, but you shouldn’t listen to it uncritically.

Don’t waste your life trying to prove you are somebody.

Rather, build your life on the foundation of who you are.

You have nothing to prove, but you certainly have a lot to offer.
