You Don’t Need a Bigger Audience, You Need a Better Strategy

Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot,
Nothing is going to get better. It’s not.
Dr. Seuss, The Lorax

We may be living in a polarized world.

And we may disagree about the cause of that division.

But we all agree that things are broken and need to be fixed.

You may think you’re only one person and one person can’t do much.

You may think you need more zeros in your bank account or more followers on social media to have influence.

You may think you don’t have a significant audience and besides no one likes to be preached at.

This time you’d be right.

The last thing we need right now is someone lecturing us and telling us what we should do, using fear and shame to bully us into action.

Your greatest influence is your example.

If, like me, you think the world could use much more kindness, then be a benevolent vigilante.

Look for people struggling to lift something into their car and offer to help.

Notice someone who seems to be having a difficult day and greet them with a big smile.

Let someone go ahead of you in the line for any reason at all.

When you receive excellent service, tell the manager.

Send a note to a friend telling them how grateful you are for their friendship.

Take the time to learn and use people’s names.

The opportunities are all around you.

Be respectful when you offer help.

Make sure you are helping and not just trying to feel good yourself.

No act of kindness is too small.

You never know what impact it will have.

Everything we do sends ripples of influence into the future like a stone dropped into a pond.

If enough of us become kindness vigilantes, we can shape the future.

Some of your acts of kindness will be planned; others will be spontaneous.

Be creative and have fun with this.

What can you do today to brighten someone’s day?
